aeration
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
 |
Thatch on your lawn
works like a thatched roof. A layer of plant parts, roots
and stems sheds water and prevents fertilizer from moving freely into the soil where they are most effective.
Aeration is a great method
for breaking down moderate thatch build-up naturally and
thickening up lawns in compacted clay soils. Aeration is a
process which removes small cores of soil from your lawn, which in
turn 'melt' back into the lawn after a few rainfalls. The
holes created by aeration catch fertilizer and water. Turf
roots naturally grow toward these growth pockets and thicken in
the process. Aeration holes also relieve pressure from
compacted soils, letting oxygen and water to move more freely into
the root zone. Performed once or twice a
year, aeration can significantly reduce thatch and increase the
effectiveness of your turf building programs. |

overseeding
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . |
 |
| Overseeding
combined with aeration can make your lawn thicker and healthier
and fight weeds naturally. Broadcasting seed over a healthy,
newly aerated lawn gives new grass ideal conditions for
germination. Increasing the number of plants in your lawn
gives your yard a healthier, more lush appeal. The holes
created by the aeration give the new plants room for fast root
development. Overseeding also helps
reduce the number of weeds in your yard by crowding them
out. Weeds can often take hold in thinner lawns.
By thickening up your lawn - you prevent weeds. |

lime . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . |
 |
| Proper
pH levels in your lawn help determine how well your
fertilizers work and how healthy your lawn looks.
Traditionally, lawns in our area are very acidic or
"sour." Lime sweetens soil to unlock
nutrients in fertilizers and heighten the effectiveness of
everything else we do. Lawn-Wright/Organic Lawns can
determine how much lime your lawn needs by performing a soil
test, analyzed by the University of Maryland's Agronomy
Department. Proper liming can increase the soil's
microbial activity which aids in thatch control and increase
the vibrancy and vitality of your lawn. |

slit seeding . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . |
 |
| Major
lawn renovation can be unsightly and expensive. Many
people think that in order to overhaul their lawns they need
to pull up sod and till their front yards. But modern
technology has changed our approach. We use a system
called slit seeding to slice through sod to plant new seed
directly into the soil, eliminating the need to strip your
lawn. Slit seeding is necessary when thatch builds up
over one half inch, beginning to interfere with the health
growth of your lawn. Older and neglected lawns may
become infested with unwanted grasses which should be
removed and replaced. Serious disease and insect
damage can also thin a lawn so badly that renovation is the
only answer. Lawns that are planted with grasses that
require more watering may need to be converted to more
drought-tolerant types. For all of these cases, slit
seeding is one of your best and most economical solutions.
The Slit Seeding
process works in three steps: slicing knives cut
through thatch and into the soil creating grooves and mixing
soil with thatch, seed tubes place seed into the prepared
grooves, and then disks or rollers close soil over the
seed. This process provides proper seed-to-soil
contact and results in much better germination and growth
rates than seed that is broadcast or spread by hand. |

trees & shrubs . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . |
 |
|
| Trees
and shrubs increase in value and beauty with each passing
season. Lawn-Wright's Tree and Shrub Care Program is
tailored to your property, making it easy to protect your
landscape from the hundreds of diseases and insects which threaten
its beauty. In the coming months, insects and fungi pose
significant threats but can be controlled with horticultural oil
treatments and deep root fertilization. Now is the time to
schedule weeding and mulching of your beds. Protect your
investment by locking moisture into the soil and preventing
run-off. We create a perfect edge and remove any weeds, and
then lay down a generous layer of fresh, hardwood mulch. |

pruning . . . . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . . |
 |
|
| Pruning
is essential to your landscape plants continued
vitality. Now is the time to schedule your second
round of pruning. Pruning during the summer has
significant advantages. Scheduling your pruning now
will allow your plant's developing new shoots an opportunity
to harden before the first frost arrives later this
Fall. By encouraging new growth now you better prepare
your plant for a flourishing Spring next season! |
